Good nutrition is the foundation for good oral health and your total health.
A leafy green salad has many more benefits than being a tasty low-calorie meal like- a Mars Bar or a Big Mac!
You would never knowingly pour acid on your teeth, but it happens every day when you eat or drink something sugary!
Chemistry 101
When sugars combine with the bacteria in your mouth and saliva, acid is produced and can remain on your teeth for up to 20 minutes according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Brushing your teeth is the only way to eliminate that acid, which is slowly eating away the enamel and that results in cavities.
The Potential Risks
Oral health is considered to be the window to your overall health according to research completed by the Mayo Clinic. Poor oral health can be linked to increases in Cardiovascular Disease, Pneumonia, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s. With a few simple dietary choices, you will enjoy good oral health and have a lifetime foundation for overall good health.
The 5 Components of Your Total Health
It is accepted that overall health relates to Mind, Body, and Soul– you’re a package deal. It’s much like a pie that is cut into 5 equal pieces with each portion of that pie having equal importance. You must have all 5 and in balance to have total health.
- DIET
- EXERCISE
- REST
- MENTAL
- STRUCTURE
And, just as Oral Health impacts your Overall Health, your Food choice directly impacts your Oral Health. It goes without saying, that smart food choices will help maintain not only healthy teeth but your expression of a healthier you.
The American Dental Association Food Recommendations:
- Cheese
- Yogurt
- Leafy Greens
- Apples
- Carrots
- Celery
- Almonds
Most importantly, avoid foods high in sugar, especially when you will not be able to brush regularly. Remember, sugars create acid in your mouth, e.g. fructose, sucrose, and lactose. This included all fruit, so, brush ASAP after it is consumed. Also, beware of STARCH which your body converts to sugar and follows the same pathway to produce more acid in your mouth. When in doubt, do not eat it.
Regular Dental Care
Regular visits to your dentist are critical for professional cleaning and keeping your teeth your whole life. Knowing the best toothbrush and proper cleaning and whitening techniques will contribute to healthy outcomes, ask your dentist for recommendations.
